Scaling up prototypes to the production phase

About MNM

Manufacturing NextMaterials (MNM) is an ambitious European initiative aimed at scaling up from prototypes to test production of parts and components with smart and sustainable properties. The MNM project focuses on providing flexible production technologies for SMEs, for the processing of smart and sustainable materials used in lightweight components for mobility, advanced battery systems and sustainable energy solutions.Closing the gap For SMEs in materials technology, there is ample government support up to the stage of prototype development. But after the prototype phase, the public support ends and they struggle to upscale towards production and reach the market. During the scale-up process they face obstacles in setting up and executing test productions as well as in convincing customers and investors and dealing with regulations and industry standards of the neighboring market. Manufacturing NextMaterials is closing that gap. Specifically by creating 40 cross-border Scale-up projects for approximately 60 SMEs from the border region Germany-Netherlands. With the focus on high Technology Readiness Levels (TRL6-TRL8) the project connects with the target group of SMEs that face challenges in scaling up their existing prototype. Collaboration between an SME and Knowledge institution is also permitted.Support SMEs in Dutch-German border region The project organises three Lighthouse-pilot projects, workshops, trainings and matchmaking sessions as well as an open call to support the SMEs in the Dutch-German border region. In total we aim to support about 120 SMEs in their scale-up challenges. The project runs from 2024 to November 2027 and is supported by the Interreg VI program Germany-Netherlands.Feasibility studies are not in the scope of this project. A prerequisite for the submission and implementation of a scale-up project is the cooperation between a Dutch and a German SME or knowledge institution. &nbsp; Oost NL, NMWP.NRW and BOM are the core partners of the project. Together with five knowledge institutes and CATO Composites, Application Centre of Saxion University of Applied Sciences, Fraunhofer Innovation Platform of University of Twente, University of Münster, Fraunhofer Institute for Battery Cell production and Rapid Technology Centre of University of Duisburg-Essen are working on three so-called Lighthouse pilot projects.
